My work is trompe-l'œil painting, literally from the French trompe-l'œil means "trick the eye." Its fundamental premise is to convice the viewer at least for a moment that what he sees is real and not a painting. The general rules of tromp l'oeil painting are that objects are rendered in real scale totally within the shallow painted space.
This type of painting has nearly always been a minor branch of realist painting, but with a long history. The story of the fifth century b.c. athenian painters' Xeuxis and Parrhasios as told by Pliny the elder in his natural history from the second centurd a.d. and later the Romans mural paintings are early examples. Sixteenth century Dutch vanitas painting and nineteen century Philadelphia school painting (harnett, peto and haberle) are later examples. Today there are still a few trompe-l'œil painters, I am happily one.
