Artist Information
Toni Lowden
"I've always had an attraction to fibers. And the color and texture of weaving always has fascinated me."
Toni Lowden works with textiles, weaving largescale tapestries that have more in common with paintings and sculptures than the simple weaving with which most people are familiar. Her tapestries depict realistic landscapes or abstract blends of color and texture, every bit as intricate as the work of a painter. She sketches her designs before sitting down to intertwine the fibers, and her loom allows her to make changes as she weaves.
"Tapestry weaving allows you to put your own designs behind the loom and weave them out," she says. "You're always concerned with balance and composition and form and all the principles of good design."
A Reno local since 1963, Lowden has received the Award of Excellence from the American Tapestry Alliance and a Governor's Arts Award from the Sate of Nevada.
