I began weaving sculptures with wire in 1989, using a technique I invented while fooling around with steel flower arranging wire. I made a series of spheres and then began to make other simple three dimensional geometric shapes using a dense, opaque wire weaving technique. I experimented with different metals, including silver, copper, brass, aluminum and colored aluminum. Over the next several years, I designed a variety of fruit, animals, flowers, and a visually accurate globe. Eventually I began to experiment with a less densely woven technique, feeling that it would be more appropriate for larger forms. I then began to sculpt the human figure, at first making 6" scale pieces. The largest human figure sculpture I have made at this point is life-sized. I enjoy sculpting the human figure as it is one of the most expressive forms available. The posture and positioning communicates mood, intention and feeling. The natural colors of silver, brass, gold and copper suggest human diversity. The weaving can represent interconnectedness or interaction. I find that dance poses and other poses in which the body appears to be caught in motion work well in mobiles. I am fascinated by the constantly changing appearance of mobiles and enjoy the shadow cast by my work, which can appear three-dimensional and are striking to watch in direct light. The combination of this weaving technique, which is new, and the style of my work, which draws on classical sculpture, allows my work to feel at home in a setting of modern or traditional decor. I feel greatly rewarded by the enjoyment that my work brings to nearly everyone who experiences it.
