"Working with silk and dyes has changed the way I view the world and has given me the perfect vehicle to illustrate the way in which I see it. The textures and colors of landscapes come to life on the smooth shiny silk, colors penetrate and move, serendipity is a huge force, absolute control has to be abandoned, and desires are negotiated with resists and surface treatments. The end painting is unpredictable, often better than you anticipated and the process is always ready to teach you something new."
Soaring birds, running horses and cascading flowers are the inspiration for the vibrant silk paintings of Louise Noel Howes. Howes has been a resident of the area for nearly 40 years and is clearly influenced by the limitless beauty of the Sierra range and the grandeur of the Eastern Slope. The paintings on silk shimmer with color and her whimsical approach portrays life seen through a positive joyful eye. For 45 years, Howes has followed her artful path...from pen and ink drawings produced while in her teens...to mugs and bowls, thrown in a potters studio to finance college years and then on to weavings and quilts constructed while living in the coastal town of Cambria. A woodworking business, producing whimsical children's furnishings filled the next 20 years. Then Howes encountered her first silk painting and a new life began.
